4 Fun Dog Tricks to Teach Your Dog at Home

Want to teach your dog something new? Learning tricks is a fun way to spend quality time together while encouraging mental stimulation, focus and positive interaction.

You don't need to be an expert dog trainer to get started. With patience, consistency and a few tasty rewards, you can help your dog learn some fun new skills.

1. Teach Your Dog to Give Paw 🐾

Giving paw is a fun beginner trick that encourages your dog to pay attention to your cues and interact with you.

How to teach it:

  1. Ask your dog to sit somewhere quiet and comfortable.
  2. Hold a small treat in your closed hand and let your dog investigate it.
  3. When your dog lifts their paw, reward them straight away.
  4. Repeat and gradually introduce a cue such as “paw”.

Tip: Be patient and reward small steps. Never pull or force your dog's paw into position.

2. Teach Your Dog to Spin 🔄

Spin encourages your dog to follow a visual cue and focus on you. It can also add variety to your training sessions.

How to teach it:

  1. Stand facing your dog with a treat near their nose.
  2. Slowly guide the treat in a circle.
  3. Reward your dog when they follow the treat and complete the turn.
  4. Repeat and introduce a cue such as “spin”.

Tip: Keep the movement gentle and avoid repeated spinning, particularly if your dog has mobility issues.

3. Teach Your Dog to Touch Your Hand ✋

Hand targeting teaches your dog to touch your palm with their nose. It's a useful foundation skill that can help you guide your dog during other training activities.

How to teach it:

  1. Hold your open palm a short distance from your dog's nose.
  2. Wait for your dog to investigate your hand.
  3. Reward them as soon as their nose touches your palm.
  4. Repeat and introduce a cue such as “touch”.

Tip: Start close to your dog and gradually increase the distance as they become more confident.

4. Teach Your Dog to Go to Their Bed 🛏️

Teaching your dog to go to their bed can be useful in everyday life. It helps them learn to settle in a familiar, comfortable space.

How to teach it:

  1. Place your dog's bed in a quiet, comfortable area.
  2. Encourage them towards it using a treat.
  3. Reward them when they step onto the bed, then reward them for settling briefly.
  4. Gradually introduce a cue such as “bed” and build up the time they spend there.

Tip: Make their bed a positive place to relax, never a punishment. Build up gradually and let your dog move away when appropriate.

Why Is Trick Training Good for Dogs?

Teaching your dog tricks isn't just about learning something impressive. Short, positive training sessions can provide mental stimulation, encourage focus and create opportunities for you to bond.

Training can also help dogs practise responding to cues and build confidence through rewarding experiences. Every dog learns at a different pace, so keep sessions short, adapt activities to your dog's abilities and make learning enjoyable.

Our Top Tips for Dog Training

Keep sessions short: A few minutes is a good starting point.

Reward good behaviour: Use treats, praise or toys your dog enjoys.

Be consistent: Use the same cue for the behaviour you're teaching.

Be patient: Learning takes time, and every dog is different.

Make it fun: If your dog loses interest or becomes frustrated, take a break and try again later.
